Doha, Qatar

Well, we're here!
Here in Doha, in the country of Qatar (pronounced 'cutter') and it is good to be together as a family. My mother in law calls it Kuwait and my mom calls it Dubai, so we will just respond to 'somewhere in the Middle East' for all intents and purposes.

How do I sum up the first 2 1/2 weeks of living here? I shall try.

 I LOVE that....
-the culture here is extremely family friendly. Kids get balloons wherever you go and store workers offer to watch you kids while you shop (slightly unnerving, but still), no one stares if your kid throws a fit, and anywhere you go kids are welcome. Even at the 5 star Thanksgiving dinner we went to at the St. Regis hotel downtown....whole other blog post about that adventure!
-it's still warm. It's going to be a flip flop kind of winter and I'm loving it.
-I can get my whole house cleaned for cheap!!(and already have, twice)
-gas is about $1.00/ gallon
-we are going to see Matt so much more than we did in the States. He should be home every night, or at least most nights. What a change from before!

Things I am going to have to learn to deal with:
-traffic. Everyone we have talked to says it is the worst driving and traffic they have ever experienced. Awesome. Looks like we will be installing a DVD player in the car for the kids. We have also heard that it's not IF you get in a wreck, but WHEN. Let's hope we are in the bigger car.
-cockroaches. We've probably killed 15 so far and I have a feeling that won't be the end of them. Do they carry diseases? Don't answer that.
-no pork. Muslim country, what can you do? Turkey bacon? Eh, forget it, won't be the same.
-all electrical outlets are different here. In other words, why did I bring my 12 million electrical appliances??? Really, what a hassle. First, go buy a converter, but not just any because if you buy one with inadequate voltage then said converter will be useless and leave you with a fried computer and a whole lot of swear words. Good thing we speak Arabic so we can take it to the local computer shop to get fixed. Oh wait....we don't.

I wish I could leave you with some awesome pictures of  the beach and our place and Doha downtown, but the truth is the only ones we've taken have been of the boys on the couch playing around! And right now I'm just too tired to find the cord and attach them to this post. Sorry. Just know that we are happy and healthy and safe and warm on our side of the world. Miss you all.

Stay tuned.....

What an adventure! It sounds mostly cool except for the cockroaches; I hate cockroaches!

What an awesome experience! Glad you're settled in, what a woman you are with your 3 boys!
My Aunt had an exchange student from Qatar who lived with her for a few months. Nice guy, super rich... that's about all I remember.
I'm looking forward to reading more about your adventures!
